For all of us travellers and nature lovers alike, we tend to break a sweat while facing the hordes of tourists overtaking the streets of Barcelona. Although there is a plan in place to promote a more sustainable tourism, strolling through the city might still be challenging at times. We, the travellers, find it difficult to enjoy one of the most beautiful cities not only in Europe but probably worldwide while immersed in the mob. Here is why we propose five ecotourism activities in and around Barcelona to realign with your traveling spirit within a two-hour drive.
1. SAIL OFF OF THE BARCELONA COAST
Imagine yourself cruising softly the beautiful Mediterranean waters as you lose yourself pensive in the Barcelona skyline, thinking you must be spending all of your karma points on this one go because you have been utterly blessed. Paulo Coelho´s mysticism aside, this is one fun, inexpensive trip to see the coast and the city from a different perspective on board this wooden Turkish vessel named Karya.
Ahoy…beauty! Karya vessel in action.
Perhaps at a first glance, this might look like one of those ridiculous and impossible combos like beer and yoga; but the truth is far more appealing and simple. The whole concept is nothing than to experience the Costa Brava on a kayak, walking some parts and snorkelling around Llança (a 2h drive from Barcelona). While stopping at some points, one can learn about the many edible plants that Mother Nature provides in this area for a new point of view on tapas.
3. JOIN A CETACEAN EXPEDITION
If as a child you dreamt of saving the whales while joining any given resembling Rainbow Warrior, if you are the type who enjoys to dig deeper than your average sightings -that you would probably miss because you are staring at your screen - look no further this might be for you. The hottest volunteer one-week expedition experience out there, is undoubtedly this one.
4. THE NIGHT IS DARK, AND FULL OF CREATURES
Fear not, this is a scuba diving experience that would take you by the hand of an experienced marine biologist into discovering the wonders of the Natural Park in Cap Creus. See the glow in the dark phytoplankton!! Night and luminescence seem to fit just right… is this your kind of club? Get yourself stamped…on your dive log.
This is not the Basque Country nor Hawaii, but it is an optimal place to initiate yourself in paddle surf while you enjoy the scenery of the Delta del Llobregat, in the surroundings of the city of Barcelona.
