Very little is known in general about migration schedules of overwintering birds of the UK and Ireland, and also about the presence of scarce species. This project gathers all possible information through the collaboration of birdwatchers, which can send very useful data for researchers. The scheme is year-round, and ongoing, and anyone with an interest in birds can contribute. Important results produced by BirdTrack include mapping migration (arrivals and departures) timings and monitoring of scarce birds.
Although this project does not focus specifically on marine or coastal birds, some migratory birds, such as the whooper swan, are overwintering visitors to these areas. The project has developped an app to make it easier for collaborators to send data gathered.
