Irish Basking Shark Project
The Malin Head Survey is undertaken to study the basking shark population passing through Malin coastal waters and to refine survey models and surveying skills for the national and regional level. This project is funded by the Inishowen Basking Shark Study Group and the Inishowen Development Partnership ( Leader). Scientific support is from the Marine Biological School in Queens University Belfast. The Irish Basking Shark Study Group is an amalgamation of numerous basking shark centered programs of research and education. The overarching focus of the group is to support the sustainable management of basking sharks in the Irish and Northeast Atlantic context.
Multimedia and photos
Irish Basking Shark Project
Basking sharks are difficult animals to see and study and therefore any piece of information helps. If you are in the area, both sailing or walking at the beach, you can help!
Report a sighting:
If you see a shark, use the form on-line to send this group pictures you might have taken of the animal and some basic information on the sighting:
- Date and time
- Weather
- Number of sharks
- GPS location
Report a found tag:
If you find a tag on the water or washed on the beach, it will be very helpful for this study group to learn about it. Send them a picture of the tag and all the information written on it, together with the date and GPS location. There are pictures of different tags used by the group in the past years, so you know what to look for!
