Hiiu County is the smallest county of Estonia. It includes Hiiumaa, the second largest island of the country, and more than 200 small islands surrounding it. It is surprising that, despite its size, this region is one of the most naturally diverse of Estonia. Its variety of landscapes, sandy beaches and forests (that occupy the 70% of Hiiumaa), combined with a warmer and sunnier climate than in mainland Estonia, make Hiuu County a great destination for nature tourism.
Regarding wildlife, the waters of this area are the habitat of grey seals, while migratory birds’ routes pass over Hiiumaa, being Käina Bay the most famous spot of nesting sites and rest stops.
