There are 24 species of whales and dolphins known in these waters. We have been keeping them company on a regular basis for many years. This boat tour does not target whales and dolphins specifically, but during navigation we might encounter minke whale, common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, harbour porpoise, basking shark, and sunfish in Donegal Bay. Sometimes, when encountered, dolphins in the right conditions might play around the boat. Common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are often found in large, socially active groups and are often seen, bow-riding, surfing, lob tailing and breaching. They can leap several metres out of the water. Bottlenose, like many other whales and dolphins, are social animals. They tend to live in family groups called 'schools'. These schools can contain anything from just two or three dolphins to over fifty. Sightings are not guaranteed, as these are wild animals.
We share the area with large colonies of seals that can be observed up close. Harbour seals and grey seals are often seen on the rocks and in the sea caves of west Donegal. The area is also home to large numbers of Duck, Curlew, Oyster Catcher, Heron, Cormorant, Dunlin and Swan. Most visible are Gannets, Guillemots, Cormorant, Great Black-Backed Gulls, Puffins and Kittywakes.
