The cushion star is endemic of the Mediterranean Sea, and is usually associated to Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, where it can be found at the base of the leaves. It is of red or green coloration with white patches, and the edges of its limbs have a series of little spines.

This starfish can only be found in specific areas of the Mediterranean Sea, being the Istrian coasts one of them.
