Giant Manta Ray

This majestuous animal is the largest type of ray in the world, with an average disc size of 4-5m (15ft). It is an oceanic species and spends most of its life far from land, travelling with the currents and migrating to areas where upwellings of nutrient-rich waters increase the availability of plankton. They tend to occupie the surface or near surface waters, advancing through the water by flapping the pectoral fins like wings.

In the Atlantic Ocean they occur mainly in the Western Atlantic, but can also be found around Bermuda, tropical West Africa and the offshore islands of Madeira.
