Light-bellied brent goose

Light-bellied brent geese breed in high-arctic Canada and northern Greenland and migrate to the UK and Ireland over winter making estuaries and saltmarshes their home for these few months.

These geese once only fed along the coast, feeding on eel-grass and sea lettuce but in recent years they have begun eating grass and cereals from near-by agricultural land.

A small, dark goose, the light-bellied brent goose has a black head and neck and grey-brown back, with a pale belly. Adults have a small white neck patch. It flies in loose flocks along the coast, rather than in tight skeins like grey geese. They can often be seen forming large colonies.
