Seahorses

In the Spanish Mediterranean coast there are two species of seahorses, the short-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus hippocampus) and the long-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus). They live close to the shores, at low depths, always related to algae of seagrasses, where they can easily hide through camouflage.

Their main conservation threats are their recollection for souvenirs, and the degradation of their habitats due to human impact.

It is possible to find these two species all year round in shallow inshore waters, among algae and seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa and Posidonia oceanica). They are very difficult to locate, though, and it is recommended to go out searching for them with an experienced dive-centre that knows their habitat well.
