The violescent sea-whip is a species of colonial soft coral (Cnidaria-Anthozoa-Octocorallia). This species forms large, fan-shaped colonies; each colony is either male or female. It is found in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, and in the Western Mediterranean Sea. It is usually red in colour, but might be partly or completely yellow. Its colonies can reach up to 1m high, and 1m across. In the Costa Brava it can be observed at depths between 10 and 100 meters, in vertical rock walls and caves. The best time to observe them is in the beginning of summer, during their reproduction.
