Whooper swan

Whooper swans pair for life, and their youngsters (cygnets) stay with them all winter.

The whooper swan is a large white swan. Its black bill has a large triangular patch of yellow on it. It can be distinguished from the Bewick's swan (Cygnus columbianus) because of the size (whooper swans are larger) and because the beak always shows more yellow than black (Bewick's swans have more black than yellow). They live close to large areas of water.

Whooper swans can be seen in Ireland and UK in the winter months. They breed in Northern Europe and Asia, and migrate to the UK, Ireland and Southern Europe and Asia to overwinter. The animals arriving to Ireland come mainly from the population of Iceland.
