Your day will start at 8am at Ponta Delgada harbor, the departing point of this adventure. After a brief introduction from our Team, you will get ready to spend the day combining the search and observation of cetaceans at sea in a zodiac with “office work” on land, learning about the research led by our experienced marine biologists. You will take part in activities related to the registration of the species encountered at sea, using photo-identification techniques. You will also help to collect microplastics, allowing us to filter a certain volume of water to then quantify the presence of microplastics. We will also record acoustic data with a directional hydrophone, which will allow us to hear and record sounds emitted by cetaceans audible to the human ear. We will also seek to collect biological samples as we often observe cetacean skin and stool during our trips. When possible, these samples will be collected and kept for further analysis. All data gathered during the day will be incorporated into our database.
This extraordinary experience will boost your knowledge of the cetaceans of the Azores and your insight into the daily professional life of a marine biologist. A must-do for whale and dolphin lovers!
