Great cormorant

Cormorants are not as waterproof as other seabirds, and get their plumage wet when fishing. Therefore, it is frequent to see them standing out of the water with their wings held out to dry. A large and conspicuous waterbird, the cormorant has an almost primitive appearance with its long neck making it appear almost reptilian. Regarded by some as black, sinister and greedy, cormorants are supreme fishers. They feed on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes and rivers.

It is a very common bird, and can be seen all year round in Northern Ireland, always close to the water.
